What is Multiple?
A multiple is formed by multiplying a given number by the counting numbers.
The counting numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.
Least Common Multiple (LCM)
The least common multiple is the smallest number that is common between two lists of multiples.
To determine the LCM of 6 and 8, list their multiples and encircle the first number you see in both lists.
Multiples of 6 - 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, etc.
Multiples of 8 - 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, etc.
The LCM of 6 and 8 is 24.

There are 2 methods in finding the GCF.
1. Listing Method
2. Factorization Method


Using Listing Method:
Make a list of factors for each number and identify their GCF.
Using Prime Factorization Method:
1. Find the prime factorization of each number.
I2. dentify the common factors and multiply them.

Adding Mixed Numbers with the same Denominators

Do you know how to make a banana cake and an apple cake??
Can you help me solve my problem?

I want to make a banana cake and I will use 2 1/3 cups of flour. I also want to make an apple cake and I will use 2 1/3 cups of flour. I'm wondering how many cups of flour I will use to make these cakes.
What will I do to solve this problem?

Before we add 2 1/3 and 1 1/3, let us illustrate each mixed number first.
How do we add mixed numbers?
Follow these steps:
Step 1: First add the fractions.
Step 2: Add the whole number parts of the mixed numbers.
2 1/3 1 1/3 = 3 2/3
Putting steps 1 and 2 together: 2 1/3 1 1/3 = 3 2/3
My problem was solved! I need 3 2/3 cups of lour to make a banana cake and an apple cake.

The steps in adding mixed numbers with similar denominators are:
1. First add the fractions.
2. Add the whole numbers.
3. Combine the results.

Do you understand how to add mixed numbers?

Let's have another problem.
Tino harvested 5 3/5 kilos of mangoes and his brother Roel harvested 7 1/5 kilos. How much did they harvest together?

Solution: In the problem, the fractions given are:5 3/5 and 7 1/5.
To find out how much did they harvest together, we have to add 3/5 + 1/5 = 4/5, 5 + 7 =11
Tino and his brother harvested 11 4/5 kg of mangoes.

By the end of this session the student should be able to: 

1. Define and identify the numerator and denominator.
2. Understand the concept of equivalent fractions.
3. Understand and define like and unlike fractions. 
4. Understand the concept of a common denominator.
5. Add and subtract fractions.


After this session the students should not only be able to identify a fraction and be able to distinguish between whole numbers and fractions. They identify the numerator and denominator. The lesson later looks at equivalent fractions and mixed fractions, following which the students will get a better idea about equivalent and how to spot them. They will also know how to convert a mixed fraction into improper fraction and vice versa. The chapter also sheds light on addition and subtraction having a common denominator. This will help the students add and subtract the fractions better.
